Coffee was the starting point of The Commonage.
Our background is running a specialty coffee roastery and several cafés in Germany.
Since 2013 we have been building direct trade relationships. To understand and appreciate the whole value chain. To get to know everyone involved in the production of our favorite product. To improve quality and value sharing. To know where our products are coming from. This inner motivation has taken us all over the world to find specialty coffee. Specialty coffee is a term for high quality coffee that scores a certain amount of points in a grading process. For us specialty coffee was always more than that. It was a way to highlight special origins and their particular taste and farming practices. It is the most beautiful way of connecting people: through a product that everyone enjoys.
Highlighting the people that put in all the effort to grow and process specialty coffee has always been our mission.
It has always been our mission to improve the quality of the product and increase the standard of living of everyone who is involved in this value chain. We have started working together with coffee professionals all over the world and gained a lot of knowledge on the fields.
A high-quality coffee needs high quality soil, enough shade, irrigation and a functioning eco-system. That means high quality coffee is a regenerative farming approach that leads to a functioning agro-forestry approach.
In our special case it helps to regrow a security belt around the last indigenous rainforest of Malawi. It helps generating new sources of income, that help to reduce the pressure on the forest for illegal commercial activities.
With more than 10 years of experience in roasting specialty coffee and operating coffee shops for more than 20 years in Germany we also know the other side of high-quality coffee:

All this comes together in our domestic coffee brand The Commonage. Our coffee is grown, roasted and processed in Ntchisi District, Malawi.
It’s a high-quality product that brings together our experience as coffee roasters and the knowledge of the farmers to grow coffee. Together we build a brand that is changing people’s life and pushing boundaries of coffee quality within Malawi.
