Coffee Growing
At The Commonage, we believe that great coffee begins long before it reaches the roaster - it starts in the soil, the air, and the hands of those who nurture it. That’s why we’re proud to source our specialty coffee beans from one of Malawi’s hidden gems: the Ntchisi region.
Nestled in the central highlands, Ntchisi is known not only for its breathtaking natural beauty, but also for its misty and mild climate - ideal for growing high-quality Arabica coffee. Here, smallholder farmers have been cultivating coffee for almost 20 years. Started as an uncomplicated side crop, it quickly developed to one of the main cash crops of the area. With volatile markets and climate shocks a lot of farmers have lost their trust into the crop. Through the development into a specialty quality with the help from The Commonae farmers ar enow seeing great opportunities. Using sustainable, organic and regnerative practices that respect the land and preserve its unique ecosystem.
Why Ntchisi Coffee Stands Out
Ntchisi-grown coffee boasts a clean, complex profile. Notes of stone fruit, floral undertones, and a mild citrus acidity make it a favorite for speciality coffee lovers around the world.
These flavor notes aren’t a coincidence—they’re the result of:
High Elevation: Grown at altitudes above 1,400 meters, our beans develop slowly, concentrating sugars and building nuanced flavors.
Organic Farming: Farmers in Ntchisi use traditional, chemical-free methods, often passed down through generations.
Careful Harvesting: Every cherry is handpicked at peak ripeness, ensuring consistency and quality in every batch.
Empowering Local Farmers Through Direct Trade
At The Commonage, we work directly with Ntchisi coffee cooperatives to build lasting, equitable partnerships. Direct trade ensures that farmers receive fair prices, way above the world market price. Though full transparency we build trust, and a shared commitment to quality.
By investing in local infrastructure, training, and sustainable farming education, we’re helping communities in Ntchisi thrive - economically and environmentally.
